Which should I buy? The X100F, XT2 or the XPRO2?
Firstly this is not a comparison in specs as such, it’s just a question I’ve been struggling with. I thought I’d share my thoughts as there could be someone going through the same thing as I have been.
With the weddings picking up this year and being in a position to upgrade my gear I thought I would. As it currently stands my set up is, the XT1 coupled with the XF56mm 1.2 and X100T. I have the 18mm and the original 35 to mix things up. I also owned an XE-2 as back up which I got rid of last year. So the reasons I would like to upgrade:
• WR (weather sealing)
• Dual card slots
• Back up
• In a position where I can (most importantly)
Those are the reasons so what should I upgrade to?
Let’s face it, it wasn’t a great amount of time ago that the XT1 was boss. Image quality is already on point. It’s marginally smaller than the newer flagship models. The problem really only lies with one of my camera’s. It pains me to say it but it’s the X100T. It is a brilliant little tool but I’ve been somewhat blinded by love. It is slow and not the best in dimly lit situations. I don’t want to turn my back on it as soon as the X100F is released but I do need to upgrade now that I can.
So what’s going to replace my beloved X100T?
Well as most people know Fujifilm released 2 new camera models this week X100F and the XT20. I can rule out the XT20 with out even needing to look at it. It’s not going to take a massive amount of time to rule the F out either, just a little more effort and will power! The X100F seems like the obvious upgrade. I want a better 100T after all so this is it surely? But is it? According to what I’ve read, It has a better sensor, better processor, more dials on the top plate for improved control, a joy stick (ooooooo) and more af points. All in the same not WR body with the same f2 lens. That is another thing that concerns me ever so slightly with the x100t and that’s how soft the lens is wide open. Add to this the whopping price tag of £1250! My head has actually managed to rule my heart for once! Obviously I have no doubt this camera is an improvement and if I had the money I would order 2 but I don’t so I can’t. Before I think about more gear for my personal photography I need to think about the work I want to achieve.
I guess that now leaves me with the decision of the xpro2 or the XT2.
Right, so both are weather sealed, both are faster than what I have already and both have dual card slots. Brilliant, that’s it then just shut my eyes and pick one!
Well not exactly.
By rights I should be happy with either one. The thing is though I prefer the way my 100 feels compared to the XT1, also I prefer the way I feel when using it. Seeing as that’s the camera I’m really looking at retiring I should go for something similar right? The XPRO2 has the same rangefinder look and has the awesome OVF. Although larger in size it’s not massive. I don’t shoot video on my camera’s so I’m not bothered about 4K. The XT2 is slightly faster but nothing that I’ll notice unless shooting sport I guess. Plus I’d need to buy the battery grip to really see its full potential, that’s an extra £300. Well that’s it, my decision has been made!
Or has it?
This is actually the point where I went online and placed my order, one XPRO2 and one 23mm f2 lens.
So off I go to the park with Rosie and our daughter but before heading out I grab a camera. Usually this would be the X100T but I thought I’d dust off the XT1 and the 18mm lens. I forgot how much I actually enjoyed this little combo! The one thing that did have me sway towards the xt2 for a moment was the tilt screen. No tilt screen on the xpro2? “Oh well, I don’t really use it anyway” I said. Well that’s a lie! All I done was shoot from the screen! My daughter is 5ft shorter than me so it’s the perfect tool for photographing at her level. I also managed a little Street Photography with it before writing this and the flip screen is brilliant for stealthy shots.
What have I done?
I thought about it long and hard. I really took my time and I didn’t rush. I was 100% sure! Now I’m questioning the whole thing again??
So what now?
Well I’m sticking to my guns because although the tilt screen was getting used at the park, my XT1 very rarely gets a look in. If the tilt screen was that valuable then that wouldn’t be the case. I’m sure that once my new toys arrive I’ll be over the moon with them. Plus who knows, the way things are looking I may just be able to buy myself the xt2 as well. I guess one thing could be done from now on though? Fujifilm could put tilting screens on all their models!
